  • Every spring in Athens, the city hosts the Twilight Series. These bike races, including the Twilight Criterium, attract cyclists from teams across the country to compete in an intense 80K race within downtown.
  • Athen’s University of Georgia is the first chartered state university in the US (1785).
  • National acts such as R.E.M., the B-52’s, Widespread Panic and Pylon formed their roots here in Athens, GA.
  • The Morton Theatre, built in 1910 in Athens’ historic “Hot Corner,” is one of the four remaining vaudeville theaters remaining in America.
  • In the early 20th century, Georgian and philanthropist George Foster Peabody gifted Athens with a new city library and contributed to the construction of the campus’ Memorial Hall. In his honor, the prestigious Peabody Awards are given by UGA for broadcast and storytelling.
